Fall Reflection Art

Here are our representations of what we see in the fall colors.

We created fall trees reflecting in a lake.

The medium we used was oil pastels and tempera paints.

Our Own Veteran - Mr. Domingo

Mr. Domingo

We asked Mr. Domingo to bring in his Marines memorabilia to share with us. We all got to look at his pieces and pictures and ask him questions.

He served in Vietnam and was stationed in Hawaii prior to this tour of duty.

Mr. Domingo printed off a picture of a Marine Uniform. He also showed us his belt buckle.

Mr. Domingo's younger self is right in the center of this picture - look for the faint circle.

His batallion was the first to arrive in Vietnam, so President Johnson gave the troops a ribbon/medal to decorate their uniform for their bravery.

Mr. Domingo showed us his dog tags, ribbons and awards.

Theme Unit

We have been working on the concept of theme in books. Here is the anchor chart we constructed together to learn about these concepts. Ask your child what these themes mean.

 

We used these picture books to examine the themes: acceptance, perserverance, compassion, courage, kindness, cooperation, responsibility, honesty, and friendship.

Our class earned the Golden Dustpan Award for having the cleanest classroom for the month of October. We should be proud of the award because we help the custodians keep the rooms clean, and this is a way for us to show pride in our school. Congratulations Room 206!

Election Candidates

Today was the day to turn in our posters to get our classmates to vote for us. Here are the posters that the student made.

 

We have five candidates that were elected in our Primary Election last week. Congratulations to these candidates. We look forward to the speeches tomorrow before our election.

Bat Lady Barb!

The wonderfully spirited Bat Lady Barb came to see us today.

She is not married to Batman! She is a bat doctor.

Here is a flying fox model that she shared. Flying foxes are pollinators. They also see very well, and eat fruits and nuts.

Second grade met in the Science Room to hear our presentation.

Here are some models of former bats that died.

Below, are pictures and models of items pertaining to bats: misquitoe, vampire, Batman. Many of the items are used to disspell notions and ideas about bats. Bats are truly our friends. They are harmless to humans, and indeed, help our farmers rid pesky pests. They also eat lots of mosquitoes that like to munch on us!

This is CleaBATra. She is a silver-haired bat that Barb must care for in her home.

We got to see CleoBATra eat a meal worm. Our students raised meal worms last year in science.

This is RoBATor. He is a large brown bat. He sure isn't very large, is he?

Ask your child to share some of his/her knowledge about bats. We've studied them for a month! They know a lot.

 

A big thanks to Barb, as she donates the money she makes with her speaking engagements to the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center. We always enjoy our time with Barb.  

Harvest Party Delights

We had such a great time at our Harvest Party!

First, we graphed Skittles that Mr. Standlee bought us.

Then we counted each column.

Then we made totals. Afterwards, we made a gallery walk to make notes and notices about what we see. Finally, we talked to our neighbor about what we saw. Mrs. Standlee then asked us some questions. The biggest notice we made was that the class had waaaaay more oranges than any other color. Why orange? Purple had the least. Why? Purple is Mrs. Standlee's favorite flavor - of course - it's a Husky color. What is your favorite flavor? The Skittles makers think it's orange, I think.

While we worked on coloring our Bingo game boards, we went through the yummy line. There was just too much from which to choose!

We were very lucky to have so many goodies.

We had some wonderful parent helpers with us, too.

We played Bingo and several student won.

The last event, was choosing our pumpkin to take home from the little pumpkin patch that Mrs. Standlee made. Mr. and Mrs. Standlee want to send a shout-out to Carpinitos because they gave Mr. and Mrs. Standlee a discounted teacher price. Wasn't that nice of Carpinitos?
